Health Disparities in HIV/AIDS: Focus on African Americans
The purpose of this program announcement is to encourage drug abuse and mental health research to better understand the disparities in HIV/AIDS in minority populations, particularly among African Americans, who as a group, have experienced exceptionally high rates of new HIV infections and worse survival rates than other ethnic/racial groups in this country. Drug abuse research on HIV among African-Americans is encouraged to elucidate the relationship between drug use, abuse, and dependence on the incidence and prevalence of HIV/AIDS and AIDS-related morbidity and mortality; to develop effective, culturally sensitive prevention, intervention, and treatment programs for drug abuse and HIV/AIDS; and to understand the nexus of drug abuse, criminal justice involvement, and HIV/AIDS.
Research on mental health issues in HIV risk and HIV infection among African Americans is encouraged on determinants of risk taking in a variety of contexts, the impact of neuropsychiatric comorbidities associated with HIV, development of a spectrum of culturally appropriate HIV interventions targeting mental health aspects, testing of behavioral interventions for their sustainability and translation to real-world settings, and improvement of mental health and HIV service utilization.
