Virginia Groups Call on Congressional Delegation To Oppose Cuts, Support “Fair and Balanced” Budget

Budget Committee Proposals Would Hurt Virginia and Represent Wrong Priorities

Richmond, VA – With key votes in Congress looming this week, a broad array of Virginia organizations urged Virginia’s congressional delegation to oppose proposed budget cuts in education, health care, environment, veterans’ benefits and services for vulnerable populations. Like the President’s budget issued last month, the budget plans approved by the House and Senate Budget Committees contain costly tax cuts, which — when combined with proposed increases in defense spending —are larger than the proposed reductions in domestic programs. As a result, both budget plans would make the deficit larger than it would be if no policy changes were made. Senate and House floor votes on the budget will be taken this week.

“These cuts will harm Virginia families and shift costs to the state” stated Fred P. Orelove, Ph.D., Executive Director, Partnership for People with Disabilities “We are calling on our congressional delegation to oppose any budget that will hurt Virginia.”

VORA has joined the Virginians for a Fair Federal Budget, the group that released this notice to the press yesterday, and we write you to ask that you call your Senators tomorrow morning!

Medicaid is at serious risk of changing — at the cost of our poorest and neediest Virginians.

On Thursday morning, March 17th, our Senators Allen and Warner MUST hear from you —

Senator John Warner – 202-224-2023 ; fax 202-224-6295; or email via the
Senator’s website: www.warner.senate.gov

Senator George Allen – 202-224-4024; fax 202-224-5432 ; or email via the
Senator’s website: www.allen.senate.gov

Toll-free switchboard – 800-247-2971 (sponsored by the American Friends
Service Committee) or 800-828-0498 (sponsored by the Families USA).

Message: DON’T CUT MEDICAID AND OTHER DOMESTIC PROGRAMS!

Please support the Smith-Bingaman amendment to strike the Medicaid cuts
in the Senate Budget Resolution and replace it with a bipartisan commission
to examine Medicaid.

Did you know that nationwide, Medicaid is the single-most important source of access to medical services for persons living with HIV/AIDS? What will we do in Virginia if this resource is cut?

51 Senators must vote to support the Smith-Bingaman amendment. Please tell Senators Allen and Warner that you look to see their names on the list of those who voted "Yes" to the Smith-Bingaman amendment.

Thank you for taking the time to make this critical call.
