Thursday is December 1st — World AIDS Day …
It is on this day that I remember one person that I met about twelve years ago now. He was a person on one of those HIV/AIDS groups in which many of us participate. Important groups, but oh so tiresome sometimes …. The process and the bureaucracy … He was quite sick when I first met him, but his determination impressed me tremendously.
No wonder. This man was a former Naval officer, and he was fighting for his life.
Not long before he died, I had done something at one of those meetings that had precipitated a note from him to me — I don't remember what anymore. But I'll tell you that I've kept that note ever since — He wrote to me that "As I put down my own burdens, it is heartening to know that people like you are still carrying on the good fight." He didn't know, but I was getting tired — and thinking about moving on.
His note went on from that, and as it closed, he wrote, "You will be in my prayers."
I would be in his prayers? At first that seemed odd to me — but then I realized what he had said.
And so, tomorrow evening I will once again celebrate what he taught me those many years ago, and pray to continue the Good Fight.
And now I turn my thoughts to you …
How about you?
Where will you be on World AIDS Day this year?
What's your story?
I'd be honored if you choose to use VORA to share your story with us all.
Please write about what you are doing, about what you are thinking on December 1st this year.
What we share with each other strengthens and teaches.
And to receive your story, I will be grateful.
