We update this list regularly. Even so, it’s a good idea to call to make sure the days and hours for testing are still current.
All testing for HIV is FREE of charge unless indicated otherwise.
How is the test done? There are different kinds of HIV tests – some use blood (a finger stick or a large blood sample may be used) and others use fluids from your mouth (saliva). For some, a lab runs the test and results are ready in a few days. Others are “quick” and the result is ready much sooner. If the kind of test is important to you, call the clinic ahead of time and ask what kind of test they use.
“CONFIDENTIAL Testing,” means you provide your name, and the results of the test are kept confidential (except in certain special situations). The place that tests can tell you more about that.
“ANONYMOUS Testing,” means that you do not provide your name, nor is it reported at that time. A special code is given to you before testing that substitutes for your name. To get the results, you must return to the clinic.
Virginia was a leader in the nation in keeping track of how HIV was spreading. So why does the Health Department get the results of my test and what do they do with it?
Most serious diseases that are spread person-to-person, like HIV/AIDS, are reported to the Health Department so that outbreaks can be identified and then fought by public health experts. Public funding for HIV services also goes to the places where the disease is found. It is in everyone’s best interest to have accurate information about where the HIV virus is in Virginia – both to prevent its spread, and to get funding that can help people living with HIV receive care. And the information is kept strictly confidential.
