Vote today (really)!

Vote today (really)

Danville Register and Bee
June 14, 2005

Most people don’t bother to vote in primary elections.

The candidates who need every vote, the poll workers who will put in a long day today and lovers of democracy everywhere would all like voter turnout to be much higher.

But it won’t happen.

When it comes to predicting voter turnout, experience is the best teacher, and the results from past primaries indicates most people pretty much ignore them.

Unfortunately for American democracy, presidential elections get the most attention from the voters - with less interest for state and local races. Today’s state election will decide the major-party candidates for the November ballot. Most observers would be surprised if turnout topped 10 percent.

Of course, four months from now, people might complain that they don’t like the choices on the ballot. They may wish “better” people had decided to run for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. But what’s the point of complaining about the candidates on the November ballot - or the problems facing this state - when everyone has a chance to do something about it today?

THAT'S THE WAY THE DANVILLE REGISTER & BEE'S EDITORIAL STARTED OUT THIS MORNING …

SO …. HAVE YOU VOTED TODAY?

Today is the day that People Living with HIV/AIDS, their friends, family, and others can — in fact! — play a substantial role in the choices to be made in November!

We're not telling you who to vote for — that's not the point — the point is — "VOTE TODAY (REALLY!!)"

Not sure who to vote for?

Here are a couple of sites that might help … and go to the polls. There will be people there who will be more than willing to help you.
